SEEDLESS RAISINS
Sultanina

Sultanina (known as such in Spain, Chile, and Argentina) or Sultana (in Australia and South Africa) is a white grape variety known as Manzuva in some regions of Spain due to its apple-like texture. It is also known as Thompson Seedless in the United States, Lady de Coverly in England, and Kishmish with oval fruits in Iran, Turkey, and Palestine.

This type of grape is native to Asia Minor, which was later spread and grown worldwide. The Ottomans took the variety from the island of Crete in the 19th century. Sultana raisins were exported from the Ottoman Turkish Empire to English-speaking countries, hence its name Sultana or Sultanina. Currently, Turkey and Australia are the main producers. It is a widely known and grown variety for its qualities as a fresh consumption grape and raisin. Due to the easy drying of its berries, this variety is excellent for raisin production.

It is a very vigorous and moderately productive grape. It adapts well to trellis training.

It has enological potential, allowing the production of a neutral wine with pronounced acidity and freshness. Sometimes, also used as a base for sparkling wines. This grape is defined as the “grape of the three ways”, as it can be used as a table grape, for making raisins, and for winemaking.

It is an ideal grape for fresh consumption because it is very sugary, with delicate acidity, thin skin, and neutral flavor. And it is exceptional for consumption as raisins because the berries dry easily, resulting in high-quality raisins.
